Where to find YubiKey Firmware


This article will guide you through multiple methods of finding the firmware version of your YubiKey or Security Key. 

bulb-light-icon.svg Note: Yubico Security Keys do not come with Serial Numbers (S/N). 

 

Using the YubiKey Verification Page (Desktop) [preferred method - firmware 5.4 and newer]

  1. Navigate to https://www.yubico.com/genuine/ in a web browser.

  2. Insert your YubiKey
  3. Click Verify Device
  4. Click Allow when prompted to "Allow this site to see your security key"

  5. Once completed, the firmware will be shown on the page if the device is firmware 5.4 or newer.Screenshot 2024-09-12 at 11.39.46 AM.png

Using the YubiKey Verification Page (Mobile)

  1. Navigate to https://www.yubico.com/genuine/ in a web browser
  2. Click Verify Device
  3. Insert the YubiKey or tap the YubiKey to your mobile device's NFC antenna
    Note: If you scan an NFC capable YubiKey firmware 5.7+, the YubiKey must be plugged into a power USB port at least once before attempting this test on mobile. If this isn't done, scanning the YubiKey will result in a browser window opening to this website.
  4. Enter the PIN of the FIDO application if prompted
  5. Tap the YubiKey's gold disc, or tap the YubiKey to the mobile device's NFC antenna again
  6. Once completed, the firmware will be shown on the page if the device is firmware 5.4 or newer

Yubico Authenticator for Desktop

  1. Download and install Yubico Authenticator for desktop, available here.
  2. Insert your YubiKey and open Yubico Authenticator
  3. You will see the Device Type, Serial Number (S/N) and the Firmware (F/W) version of the YubiKey currently plugged in, assuming the application is on the Home screen. If not, click  Home to locate the firmware version.

Yubico Authenticator for iOS

  1. Open Yubico Authenticator, open the meatballs menu (...) in the upper right corner  and tap Configuration
  2. Plug in the YubiKey or swipe down from the top of the screen to open the NFC prompt and tap your YubiKey to the phone's NFC antenna
  3. You will see the Device Type, Firmware Version (F/W) and Serial Number (S/N) of the YubiKey that is currently plugged in (or scanned)

Yubico Authenticator for Android

  1. Open Yubico Authenticator and tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the upper left corner.
  2. Plug in the YubiKey or hold an NFC -capable YubiKey to your phone's NFC antenna
  3. You will see the Device Type, Serial Number (S/N) and Firmware Version (F/W) of the YubiKey that is currently plugged in (or scanned)

YubiKey Manager

  1. Download and install YubiKey Manager, available here.
  2. Insert your YubiKey and  open YubiKey Manager. 
  3. You will see the Device Type, Serial Number (S/N) and the Firmware (F/W) version of the YubiKey currently plugged in.

YubiKey Manager Command Line Interface

  1. Download and install YubiKey Manager CLI, available here.
  2. Insert your YubiKey.
  3. Open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux) and run the command ykman info. Executing this command will print the Device Type, Serial Number (S/N) and Firmware version (F/W) of the plugged in YubiKey.
