Getting Started with YubiKey on MacOS

This article applies to all YubiKey devices.

These steps are valid for both Mac OS X and macOS systems only. The YubiKey can be connected to certain iPad or iPhone devices. If you have a FIDO U2F Security Key by Yubico, you can test your device at in using Chrome or Opera. Or you can add your Security Key directly to your Google, Facebook, Dropbox, or other accounts that support the FIDO U2F protocol.

How to get started using your YubiKey

  1. Insert your YubiKey in the USB port with the USB contact facing upward. The first time you use the YubiKey, wait until the green light around the touch button is steady, indicating that your Mac has detected the device.
  2. The Keyboard Setup Assistant dialog box appears the first time the YubiKey is plugged into the computer. Click Continue.
    • If the message "Your keyboard cannot be identified" appears, click OK or Skip.
  3. When the Identifying your keyboard dialog box appears, touch the button on your YubiKey.
  4. In the Select keyboard type dialog box, select ANSI, and click Done.

You need to do these steps only once for each new YubiKey you want to use on your Mac. Tip: To bring back the Keyboard Setup Assistant if you accidentally closed it, from the Apple Menu, select System Preferences > Keyboard > Change Keyboard Type (button available on the bottom left of the window).
