Getting Started with YubiKey on iOS Devices

This article applies to:

The YubiKey can be connected to older iPad or iPhone devices (such as iPad 3 or iPhone 4 and older) using Apple’s Camera Connection Kit, or newer devices (such as iPad 4 or iPhone 6) using a Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter. Only core YubiKey functions (Yubico OTP, Static Password, and OATH-HOTP) are supported. These Getting Started steps are valid on non-jailbroken iOS devices (iPad or iPhones) only. For information on how to get started using your YubiKey NEO and YubiKey 4 series devices on macOS devices, see How To Get Started with YubiKey on macOS.

This article applies to YubiKey NEO and YubiKey 4 series devices only (FIDO U2F Security Key by Yubico cannot be used on iOS devices at this time).

How to use your YubiKey

  1. Make sure your iOS device is charged to at least 60% and powered on.
  2. Based on the iOS device, do the following:
  3. Insert your YubiKey in the Apple Camera Connection Kit with the USB-contact facing upward, and then connect the kit with your iOS device.
  4. Insert your YubiKey in the Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter with the USB-contact facing upward, and then connect the adapter to your iOS device.
  1. Wait until the green light in the touch button is blinking, indicating the iOS device has detected the YubiKey.
  1. If a dialog box appears with the message “The connected device is not supported” the first time the YubiKey is plugged into your device, simply click OK to exit the dialog box. Note: This is an expected user experience.
  1. Open Safari and browse to https://demo.yubico.com/.
  2. Click in the YubiKey field, and then touch your YubiKey. The YubiKey sends your One-Time Password to the server.

Note: If the One-Time Password fails (and begins with a capital letter), check to be sure you have turned off auto-capitalization in the iOS preferences. This setting is turned on by default. To turn it off, go to Settings > General > Keyboards, and slide the setting to turn off Auto-Capitalization).

You need to do these steps only once for each new YubiKey you want to use on your iOS device.
