This article guides you through multiple methods of finding the firmware version of your YubiKey or Security Key.
Info: Security Keys are not programmed with serial numbers, with the exception of the Enterprise Edition.
Using the YubiKey Verification (desktop only) [preferred method - firmware 5.4 and newer]
- Navigate to YubiKey Verification in a web browser
- Insert your YubiKey
- Click Verify Device
- Click Allow if prompted to allow this site to see your security key
- Once completed, the specific firmware version will be shown on the page if the device is firmware 5.4 or newer
Using the YubiKey Verification (mobile)
- Navigate to YubiKey Verification in a web browser
- Tap Verify Device
- Insert the YubiKey or tap the YubiKey to your mobile device's NFC antenna
Tip: If you scan an NFC capable YubiKey with firmware 5.7 or newer, the YubiKey must be plugged into a powered USB port at least once before attempting this test on mobile. If this isn't done, scanning the YubiKey will result in a browser window opening to this website due to the security function Restricted NFC.
- Enter the PIN of the FIDO application if prompted
- Tap the YubiKey's capacitive touch sensor, if plugging in over USB, or tap the YubiKey to the mobile device's NFC antenna if using NFC
- Once completed, the firmware displays on the page if the device is firmware 5.4 or newer
Yubico Authenticator for Desktop
- Download and install Yubico Authenticator, available here
- Insert your YubiKey and open Yubico Authenticator
- You will see the device type, firmware version and serial number of the YubiKey currently plugged in, assuming the application is displaying the Home screen. If not, click Home to locate the firmware version.
Yubico Authenticator for iOS
- Open Yubico Authenticator, open the meatballs menu in the upper right corner and tap Configuration
- Plug in the YubiKey or swipe down from the top of the screen to open the NFC prompt and tap your YubiKey to the phone's NFC antenna
- You will see the device type, firmware version and serial number of the YubiKey that is currently plugged in (or scanned over NFC)
Yubico Authenticator for Android
- Open Yubico Authenticator and tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the upper left corner
- Plug in the YubiKey or hold an NFC capable YubiKey to your phone's NFC antenna
- You will see the device type, firmware version and serial number of the YubiKey that is currently plugged in (or scanned over NFC)
YubiKey Manager command line interface
- Download and install YubiKey Manager CLI, available here
- Insert your YubiKey
- Open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux) and run the command
